Martin Lewis reveals the tricks to getting a cheaper supermarket delivery slot

During the pandemic the popularity of online supermarket shopping has soared, as shoppers avoid going to the stores unless necessary.

Many vulnerable shops have taken to doing their food shop online, and choosing a delivery slot for it to be delivered to ther door.

Well we got delivered Bo diddly squat. We called to enquire about our missing shopping. What a load of flannel. Don't bother doing an online shop your wasting your time. Your better off putting on a mask and gloves and going to do you shop in store yourself. Actually don't bother shopping at Asda they don't deserve to stay open. What is a recurring top-up and how can I set one up? Can I have both a low balance top-up and a recurring top-up set up on my account at the same time? What happens if I have a recurring top-up set up and my card expires? How do I link my top-up card to my Asda Mobile phone? Shop online at ASDA Groceries Home Shopping. The same great prices as in store, delivered to your door with free click and collect! Ok so it's my first time doing an Asda Christmas delivery but after ordering from Asda dozens of times I thought I was quite savvy. Booked my Christmas delivery slot as soon as they became available. Delivery due the 23rd. Plan was to update order this week now I have a better idea of numbers for Christmas dinner and what I need.

Recently, Asda and Sainsbury's announced they would be upping the price of some delivery slots.

Asda shoppers they should also be aware that recurring delivery slots between December 19 and January 2, 2021 will be axed, meaning people will have to book a slot as normal, Herts Live reports.

Sainsbury's has also raised the price of some of its delivery slots, with the typical price rising from between 50p and £7, to £2 and £7.

Instead, they are offering £1 delivery slots over four hours, and then only find out the exact hour on the day of delivery. These 'saver slots' will need to be flexible.

This follows the news that Tesco scrapped their cheapest delivery slots over the summer.

How to cut the cost of deliveries?

Martin Lewis and MoneySavingExpert have put together a list of ways to save money on the cost of a delivery.

While it might mean you have to lose your original slot or be a bit more flexible, for those wanting to save a few pounds it could help.

The consumer champion recommends:

  • Checking for less popular times to get a cheaper slot - The most expensive slots are the ones that are usually most popular, so it's worth looking to see if there's a time you can do that won't be in demand. This could be ideal if you're working from home anyway and you're able to have deliveries during early afternoons, or if you don't mind later deliveries.
  • Get a delivery pass if you're a regular online shopper - For a one-off fee most supermarkets offer a delivery pass that covers the cost of all your deliveries for a set amount of time - this could save you some cash if you regularly shop at the same supermarket during the busier times. Asda's scheme has closed for new customers, although you can still sign up for Sainsbury's plan at either £60 a year or £30 for midweek deliveries.
  • Consider click and collect, or shopping in-store if you can - It's not an option available to everyone during the lockdown and pandemic, but if you can there's savings to be had by visiting the store. If shopping as normal is completely off the table click and collect means you can do the shop online, but avoid having to pay for deliveries as Asda's service is free and Sainsbury's is free for orders over £40.
  • Switch to a rival supermarket - This might also be a chance for you to have a look at other supermarkets to see what value is available. That being said you have to bear in mind that for a couple of pounds saved on delivery you may end up paying more in shopping.

Update 26/03/20: Food delivery and click & collect slots are still unavailable, with the earliest estimates of new slots to be mid-April. Adsa has implemented a queuing system to deal with demand, and Ocado continues to have long wait times, which have now increased to up to four hours. However, some meal delivery services are still operating - details below.

Online food delivery services have become more important than ever, following the government's strict advice for everyone to stay at home to help combat the spread of coronavirus.

With more people working from home or in self-isolation, there has been a huge demand for online grocery delivery - Boris Johnson even suggested ordering food online in his address to the nation on Monday evening. But it hasn't been easy to get a food delivery slot recently.

5 top meal delivery services still taking orders

  • Mindful Chef - healthy recipe boxes with fresh ingredients for you to cook
  • Allplants - plant-based meal delivery, cooked by chefs
  • Balancebox - healthy meals delivered to your door
  • Pasta Evangelists - fresh pasta meal boxes: 20% off first box
  • Kurami - healthy meal delivery boxes

The good news is that supermarkets have been working around the clock to speed up the supply chain - so which online grocery delivery services still have slots?

We've taken a look at how the major supermarkets are dealing with this increased demand. We'll be constantly updating this page, but it looks like it'll be mid-April before new delivery slots are opened up. You'll find full details below.

Please remember to use all food delivery services responsibly. Only order what you need to preserve stocks for others who might be in need.

Grocery delivery: our process

We signed up to all the major supermarkets below, and created a shopping basket full of popular goods. We then compared four different locations to provide a sense of what stock is available in each area and whether delivery slots are currently offered.

Your situation may differ, but the locations we covered were: London, Leeds, Portsmouth and Bath. Here's the latest on which supermarkets are offering online grocery delivery today...

Next delivery slot: from April 15 (last updated 26/03/20)

Unfortunately, all Tesco food delivery slots up until April 15 are unavailable based on our research. You might find an option to order in your area, but we haven't seen any evidence of availability.

Update (26/03/20): Tesco CEO Dave Lewis has reached out to customers in a new message this week: 'We know that it's difficult right now to get a delivery slot for online shopping. We are at full capacity for the next few weeks and we ask those who are able to safely come to stores to do so, instead of shopping online, so that we can start to free up more slots for the more vulnerable.'

Tesco has a decent selection of food items online, but getting hold of them at the moment can be tricky. Most brands are in stock, but eggs, hand soap, pasta, milk and bread are the exception, with some items sold out.

According to Tesco, new slots are offered up at 23:30 each day:

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. New slots are opened up each day 3 weeks in advance at around 23:30 - 00:30. I hope that helps. TY - BarrieMarch 24, 2020

Due to increased demand, Tesco isn’t accepting any new Delivery Saver customers right now either.

A restriction of only 3 items per customer on every product line is in place, and multi-buy promotions have also been removed.

Asda

Next delivery slot: from April 14 (last updated 26/03/20)

Asda will still let you register as new online customer, but online delivery slots are not available up until April 14.

Update (26/03/20): Similar to Ocado, Asda has now implemented a queue system to deal with the high volumes of traffic its website is receiving. There's no estimate as to where you are in the queue, though, or how long you'll have to wait.

Bonus

Items such as pasta, hand soap and toilet roll are also in high demand.

In an email to customers, Asda CEO Roger Burnley has shared some information regarding how the company is working to deliver online shopping:

'We're providing our drivers with hand sanitiser and gloves, and making as many online shopping slots available as we can. We're encouraging those that are able to safely shop in person to do so - this allows us to deliver to the highly vunerable.'

Roger Burnely went on to add 'If you are self-isolating or have additional needs, please advise us in the 'other information' section when placing your order.'

How to sign up for an account

Registering is quick and easy with Asda (it says as much on its website), simply enter your email, a password and then enter your delivery postcode and you’re good to go.

When placing an online delivery order, anyone who is self-isolating is advised to fill in the ‘Other information’ section to advise where their order should be left, i.e. on the doorstep.

Ocado

Next delivery date: unknown (last updated 26/03/20)

If you visit the Ocado website you’ll be placed in a virtual queue, which can take up to four hours (the brand has paused the app due to high demand).

In an email to existing customers on 25 March, Ocado Retail CEO Melanie Smith has said that 'no matter how hard we work, we will not have enough capacity to serve the unprecedented levels of demand'.

She went on to say that 'new delivery slots will be released every day for the coming week, as and when we have capacity'.

Those who have a delivery booked for March 26 or later can still edit their orders, and it's currently unclear whether Ocado are allowing new customers.

If you do not have a delivery booked already, Ocado's website notes that there is 'limited availability over the next few days'.

Thanks, Natalia, we’re doing everything we can to serve as many customers as possible and our teams are working around the clock. Please keep checking back on the website for updates on placing new orders and when new delivery slots will be available.- RubyMarch 24, 2020

How to sign up for an account

Tick the box if you’d like to opt out of Ocado’s offers, vouchers and gifts before you hit ‘Register’.

Benefits and perks

New customers can enjoy three months free delivery with Smart Pass, and Ocado also offers one-hour delivery windows.

Coronavirus measures and policies

Ocado had to temporarily suspend its service due to high demand, but is now its back online. Customers can only book one delivery slot every seven days to free up more slots for other customers.

Some products are limited to one or two per order, and a small number of bulky items have been removed from sale to make more room in each delivery van. The company has shared how stockpiling has affected its service during the coronavirus outbreak.

We know our service has never been as important to the daily life of the country, and we want to keep you informed. This simple infographic explains why and how stock-piling food has affected our service and why putting limits on certain products is fair for everyone. pic.twitter.com/hU1A879KLVMarch 22, 2020

Sainsbury's revealed that their customer Careline has had 'one year's worth of contacts in two weeks'.

It doesn't look like many will open up in the near future either, as the brand isn't confirming any new slots at the moment - but that could well just be a lack of communication to the social media team:
